Since Hank and Mike work only once a year, their jobs are the first to go. Subsequently relegated to the unemployment office and unable to break free of their furry-tailed past, these two longtime pals are about to discover just how valuable their friendship can be in times of need.

Phim bắt đầu bằng cảnh đám cưới của Connie Corleone, con gái duy nhất của ông trùm Vito Corleone với Carlo Rizzi vào cuối mùa hè năm 1945 ở Long Island, New York. Năm 1947, Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) phải chấp hành hai án tù chung thân tại trại giam Shawshank vì tội giết vợ và nhân tình của vợ, mặc dù anh luôn miệng kêu oan. Vụ án gây xôn xao dư luận, bởi Andy là phó chủ tịch ngân hàng Portland, một nhà băng nổi tiếng. Động cơ giết người đã rõ ràng (vì ghen tuông), khẩu súng gây án cũng thuộc về Andy. Những chứng cứ trên hiện trường cũng chống lại anh. Chỉ có mỗi điều người ta bỏ sót: khẩu súng gây án đã bị ném xuống sông và cảnh sát chịu không thể nào vớt được. Người ta chỉ biết đến sự xuất hiện của nó trong vụ án nhờ thái độ thành khẩn của Andy.

Dáng vẻ trí thức, tác phong đĩnh đạc của một người từng sống trong giàu sang biến Andy thành người lạc lõng trong nhà tù Shawshank. Ngay cả những cảnh sát trong trại cũng thấy "ngứa mắt" khi nhìn thấy anh. Người duy nhất không giễu cợt Andy là Ellis Boyd Redding (Morgan Freeman), thường được gọi là Red, một tù nhân da đen đã bóc được gần 20 cuốn lịch. Ban đầu, Red coi anh là đối tượng lý tưởng cho những trò cá cược, đổi chác của ông ta.

Trái ngược với nhận định của đám tù nhân thô lỗ, Andy tỏ ra lì lợm ngay từ ngày đầu vào trại. Anh không hề than vãn và cũng chẳng thèm nói chuyện với ai suốt mấy tuần. Red vô cùng ngạc nhiên khi thấy một người quen sống sung sướng như Andy lại có thể chịu đựng cảnh kham khổ tài tình đến thế. Ông thường lân la trò chuyện với anh và dần dần họ trở thành đôi bạn thân thiết.

Đầu năm 1949, ban quản lý trại quyết định sửa lại mái nhà tù. Họ chọn ra 10 tù nhân để làm việc đó, trong đó có Andy và Red. Trong lúc làm việc, Andy vô tình nghe thấy một viên đại úy tên là Hadley phàn nàn với mấy cảnh sát dưới quyền về khoản tiền thuế lớn mà anh ta có thể sẽ phải nộp do được thừa kế một gia tài lớn từ ông bác. Vốn là một chuyên gia về tài chính, Andy tỏ ý muốn giúp đỡ Hadley. Nhờ chuyện này mà nhiều tù nhân cũng được hưởng lợi cùng với Andy, còn Hadley thì không phải mất khoản tiền đóng thuế.

Các cai ngục liên tục tìm Andy để nhờ anh giải quyết các vấn đề tài chính. Đám tù nhân ngày càng tỏ ra tôn trọng anh. Để trả ơn, họ tạo điều kiện để anh chuyển sang làm việc ở thư viện nhà tù. Cứ đến cuối năm tài khóa, cai ngục ở Shawshank và những nhà tù khác trong tiểu bang đổ xô đến nhờ anh khai báo thuế sao cho số tiền phải đóng là ít nhất. Ngoài ra, anh còn làm "cố vấn không lương" cho họ về cách chi tiêu, đầu tư sao cho hiệu quả. Giám đốc trại giam Warden Norton tin tưởng Andy đến nỗi chẳng hề suy nghĩ gì khi giao cho anh quản lý quỹ đen của ông ta.

Năm 1959, giám đốc trại Norton cho thực hiện chương trình mang tên "Trở lại cuộc sống" nhằm đưa tù nhân ra làm việc ngoài xã hội để giúp họ dễ hòa đồng với xã hội bên ngoài hơn khi được trả tự do. Được khoa trương ầm ĩ với cái mác "nhân đạo", nhưng thực chất thì đây là chương trình bóc lột sức lao động của tù nhân. Toàn bộ tiền công của họ đều bị Norton đưa vào quỹ đen của lão để rồi sau đó chúng được gửi vào nhiều ngân hàng dưới một tên giả. Người giúp Norton thực hiện kế hoạch này chính là Andy. Nhưng Norton không hề biết rằng anh cũng tranh thủ lòng tin của lão để thực hiện ý đồ riêng.

Năm 1965, trại giam tiếp nhận một tù nhân mới tên là Tommy Williams, một tay trộm cắp nổi tiếng từng "thăm viếng" nhiều nhà tù trong bang. Tommy rất được lòng mọi người nhờ bản tính hòa đồng, khiếu hài hước và hay chuyện trò. Một lần, gã kể cho mọi người nghe câu chuyện đau lòng, trong đó một tên trộm đã giết chết một đôi trai gái chỉ vì họ phát hiện ra hắn. Qua lời miêu tả của Tommy, Andy phát hiện ra người phụ nữ chính là vợ anh, còn người đàn ông là tình nhân của cô. Andy gặp Norton xin kháng án. Việc làm đó hóa ra lại là sai lầm lớn nhất của anh, bởi Norton chỉ muốn anh làm "thủ quỹ không công" trọn đời cho lão. Mấy ngày sau, Tommy bị bắn chết với tội danh vượt ngục. Andy mất đi người duy nhất có thể minh oan cho anh.

Nhưng Andy không bỏ cuộc. Trong một đêm mưa bão, anh đã đào thoát thành công sau 19 năm ngồi tù. Ngay buổi sáng hôm sau, toàn bộ số tiền của Norton nằm trong các ngân hàng bị một người đàn ông rút sạch. Sau đó, người này còn gửi một đống hồ sơ liên quan tới những hành động phi pháp của Norton tới một tờ báo nổi tiếng. Hành trình đòi lại công lý của Andy giờ đây mới thực sự bắt đầu ...

Cho đến tận ngày hôm nay, đĩa video The Shawshank Redemption vẫn là một trong những ấn phẩm được mua và thuê nhiều nhất trên toàn thế giới. Ngay sau khi phim được công chiếu, thính giả của đài phát thanh Capital FM (Anh) đã xếp nó vào vị trí đầu bảng trong danh sách Những phim hay nhất mọi thời đại. Tạp chí Empire nổi tiếng cũng bầu chọn The Shawshank Redemption ấn phẩm điện ảnh hay nhất mọi thời đại.
